Let's help children from Syria....
Syria has been living for two years a civil war that involves the whole country.
In the bloody, armed encounters two State armed forces loyal to President Bashar al Assad are opposed to an Opposition Party gathered up in a Syrial National coalition.
The war started with a simple street manifestation on the 15th of March 2011. It resulted in arrests and insurrections all over the country. The protests were aimed to a democratic system of government but they changed into continuous and bloody encounters. Simple protests have become fights with the use of heavier and heavier arms till a general war.
Up to today almost 4000 dead with more than 3800 children can be counted. One of the tragedies of this war is the great number of refugees. Some of them have reached the neighbouring countries as Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. The number of refugees have been registered by UNHCR is of 700.000 persons; most of them are women and children. The refugees live in emergency accommodations along the streets, sometimes in stables for animals or in emergency camps. The only organized camps that can have the support of international associations are out of the Country.
Sebastiano Nino Fezza and Auxilia have launched an initiative to support the children of Atma.
Atma was an olive grove where people that had escaped from the region of Idlib took shelter. There are now 14.000 refugees, 3.600 children with 900 new born babies. There aren’t any international associations. All is based on volunteers and spontaneous and variable offers. Tents are donations; there isn’t any field kitchen but only a little tent used as a kitchen which can provide only a hot meal a day.
There isn’t any hospital, only a tent used as an infirmary. There isn’t running water and every family fill their own caus. There are four toilets for all the camp. No electric power. Children suffer from the bad sanitary conditions. Scobies, lice and intestinal infections are usual and much diffused.
Atma is inside Syria and should have been a temporary camp but it has actually increased and it goes on growing more and more.
The refugees used to stop there until somebody found a new accommodation for them in another camp beyond the border. Nowadays, owing to the great number of refugees, the admissions and the destinations for refugees are controlled and the camps in Syria have become definitive structures but without the necessary means to give hospitality to refugees.
Our initiative foresees different stages. The first stage is an urgent intervention to face the urgent needs and the pressing problems of the children.
At this moment, winter causes many inconveniences and discomfort mostly for the inadequacy of the structures.
Many families left their houses taking very few things with them. The children have no shoes, no winter clothes; they cry for the cold and hunger. The children of Atma were children like all the children in the world… they laughed…they played… they dreamed.
The children of Atma had a house, a school, they had friends… suddenly all this finished. They saw their houses collapse… their schools… they saw their parents and their friends die… The children of Atma found out what war is… they found out what death is.
The children of Atma are no more as all the other children of the world… they have dreams no more, they have nightmares, they don’t smile, they don’t play. The children of Atma don’t see a future, they have no shoes.
Let’s give them a smile, let’s give them a future.
Sebastiano Nino Fezza.
