Escape from Syria...(Sebastiano Tomada)

An estimated number of almost 25,000 refugees have fled across the Syrian border
in to Turkey and Lebanon since the Bashar Al Assad regime stepped up its
military offensive against opposition activists.
In the month of March of 2012, civilians of the besieged city of Idlib,
which has seen some of the fiercest fighting in the country since the siege of Homs,
have been forced to escape in to neighboring Turkey under the cover of darkness to
avoid being captured or fired upon by Syrian armed forces loyal to the regime.
After enduring days of bombing raids and systematic military sweeps the fleeing civilians,
with the guidance of smugglers and Free Syrian Army soldiers (FSA), found them selves
displaced in Turkish territory and in make shift camps organized the Turkish government.
The following essay visually describes the struggle embedded in a journey
that will take civilians under the cover of total darkness from the outskirts of Idlib to
the refugee camps of southern Turkey.
